Fact Check: Photo Does NOT Depict IDF Officer Hera Binyafir Killed Recently After Torturing Elderly Palestinians 2010 Photo

Does a photo on social media depict an Israeli officer named Hera Binyafir who was recently killed after appearing in photos torturing elderly Palestinians? No, that's not true: The photo in the post is from 2010, and the Israeli woman in the photo is Eden Abergil, who completed her military service in 2009.

The claim appeared in a video (archived here) on TikTok by @ahmedsabry3546 on February 14, 2024, with the caption (translated from Arabic to English by Lead Stories staff):

The Zionist pig, officer 'Hera Binyafir,' who took photos with elderly Palestinians she tortured, has been killed.

This is what the post looked like on TikTok at the time of writing:

A reverse image search on Google Lens of the photo (archived here) showed it was used in a report (archived here) by France24 published on August 16, 2010, titled "Israeli officer poses for Facebook in front of Palestinian prisoners." According to the report, the photos were taken by a young female Israeli soldier named Eden Abergil and posted on Facebook in an album titled "IDF...The best time of my life."

The 2010 report by France24 said:

The photos were posted by Eden Abergil, a young Israeli woman who finished her military service over a year ago. They show the uniformed officer smiling and posing next to bound and blindfolded Palestinian men.

A search on Google News' index of credible news sites (archived here) on February 6, 2024, for the past 12 months, using the terms "Hera Binyafir Israeli killed" did not yield any results to indicate the death of an Israeli citizen named Hera Binyafir.
