Fact Check: Former Iraqi Football Team's Brazilian Coach Jorvan Vieira Is NOT Dead Vieira Denied

Has Jorvan Vieira died? No, that's not true: The Brazilian football coach, who famously led Iraq to win its first Asia Cup during the Iraq War in 2007, denied on Instagram the rumor of his own death. Additionally, the Iraq Football Association has not sent condolences regarding his alleged death, as a video claimed on TikTok.

The claim appeared in a video no longer available but archived here that was on TikTok by @vvkk1 (this account is no longer available either) on February 16, 2024, with the text overlays (translated from Arabic to English by Lead Stories staff):

The Iraq Football Association has sent condolences over the death of the Brazilian coach Jorvan Vieira, the former coach of Iraq's national team.

Coach Vieira has passed away, the one who led Iraq to win the Asia Cup in 2007.

Lead Stories conducted a Google search using the terms "Jorvan Vieira rumors" in Arabic (archived here) on February 23, 2024,. The results unveiled a post (archived here) on Instagram by @iraqiproplayers on February 16, 2024, with a caption (as translated) that read:

Jorvan Vieira denies the rumours and confirms that he is in good health.

Additionally, on February 17, 2024, one day after the upload of the video on TikTok claiming his death, the Brazilian coach published a news report (archived here) on his official web page titled "Jorvan Vieira alone at the top of the Omani I League" (translated from Portuguese to English by Lead Stories staff). The report highlights Al-Seeb, coached by Jorvan Vieira, winning 3-1 against Al-Shabab in the Oman Professional League, extending their unbeaten streak and maintaining a 4-point lead over Al-Nahda.

A search on Google News' index of thousands of credible news sites (archived here) on February 23, 2024, for the past 12 months, using the terms "The Iraq Football Association has sent condolences over the death of the Brazilian coach Jorvan Vieira, the former coach of Iraq's national team when:1y," in Arabic, did not yield any results confirming the claim.
