Fact Check: Egypt Has NOT Joined The Ukraine Defense Contact Group Not A Member

Did Egypt join the Ukraine Defense Contact Group of nations supporting Ukraine in its war with Russia? No, that's not true. Egypt remains neutral regarding the Russia-Ukraine war and it has not announced plans to join the group of nations.

There have been no official statements from Egyptian President Sisi indicating any alteration in the country's stance of neutrality concerning Ukraine and Russia.

The claim appeared in a video (archived here) where it was published on TikTok by @sisi35790 on April 6, 2023, with a caption that reads:

Egyptian President Sisi officially announces that Egypt is joining the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, which includes Ukraine, USA, Israel, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Sudan and UAE against Russia and its allies

Egypt's official stance regarding the war in Ukraine, as explained on the country's official State Information Service, is what it calls a "balanced approach" to all countries involved. An official statement identifies the policy this way:

Egypt has adopted the path of "adaptation." Egypt will not change its balanced approach in foreign policy with regard to its relations with Russia and the United States, as well as Ukraine, especially since Egypt has distinguished military and economic cooperation relations with these parties. Therefore, Egypt is heading in the paths and directions of its dealings with what is happening in Ukraine, based on its national decision, and its partnership with the Russian, American, and Ukrainian parties.

The Ukraine Defense contact group is an alliance of nations that supports Ukraine and provides the country with military equipment and training. According to the list of members, this claim also wrongly identifies the United Arab Emirates as a member of the group.
